Q: Who can apply?
A: Anyone who is currently enrolled in a study or has graduated within the last two years. Applicants from both a research university and a university of applied sciences are encouraged to apply.
Q: How do I apply?
A: You can apply here. When submitting your application, we will ask you to upload a CV and letter of motivation (300 words max.) Applications close on the 15th of April.
Q: Can I apply with a group?
A: You should absolutely motivate your friends to apply with you! However, due to our diversity criteria for teams, we do not accept group applications and cannot guarantee you will be in the same team as your friends. But do not worry, this will be a great opportunity to make new friends, and meet new people!
Q: I am not part of a student association, can I still apply?
A: Yes you can. The SBB is for all students attending a Dutch university (WO) or university of applied sciences (HBO).
Q: Is Dutch a requirement?
A: Dutch is not a prerequisite. However, we will make sure that at least one person per team speaks fluent Dutch. This is to ensure that when doing research or handling data, non-Dutch speakers are at no disadvantage.
Q: I have no knowledge or experience in sustainability or business, can I still join?
A: Absolutely. Although previous knowledge in sustainability and/or business is appreciated, it is by no means a requirement. We will provide you with training and workshops, so you will become a sustainability pro in no time!
Q: Is there a participation fee?
A: No! Apart from transportation, the Sustainable Business Battle takes in charge all costs, and you are not required to pay any fee. This is to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate and benefit from this experience.
Q: I am unable to attend one of the events. Can I still participate?
A: It is crucial for you and your team to be there for every event. If however you are unable to attend a session, due to unforeseen circumstances or a previous commitment (ex: an exam), please let us know as soon as possible! We will try and arrange something so that you can participate.
Q: How much time will I need to invest?
A: We expect you to be present for the kick-off, training days, the semi-final, and the final. Please note that most events happen during the weekend. This represents about a day per week. However, some of you might feel like you need to discuss things further. Of course, you are free to meet up with your teammates throughout the week to fine-tune your strategy for the competition. But this is entirely up to you!

Partnering with us
More information of participating as a company and our two-pager:
Q: How many companies will be participating?
A: In total, 5 companies. Each will provide students with a business case.
Q: How many students will be assigned to my case?
A: Two teams of five students each will be assigned to your case. That’s ten students in total. Each team will be made up of students from different academic backgrounds.
Q: How much does it cost?
A: The participation fee is 3000 euros. However, for a value up to 2/3 of that amount, a company can provide us with a service or location (eg. Coaching, catering, a workshop). As a non-profit organisation, the Sustainable Business Battle partially relies on the support of the participating companies. If you are unable to support the event financially, please get in touch with us.
Q: We would like to participate but we don’t have a business case.
A: This is not a problem! We would be more than happy to collaborate with you and come up with a business case together.
During the battle
Q: How much time will this take me?
A: You must ensure that at least one person from your company can represent you during the following events:
May 3rd: From 18:00 to 20:00: Networking Borrel: Meeting fellow companies, former participants, coaches, and the SBB team.
May 4th: From 13:00 to 17:00: First training day: Meeting your teams, present your case, and hearing their first pitch.
Between May 13th and 17th: In-House day: Welcoming the two teams in your enterprise. It’s your opportunity to let them know about who you are as a company and what your case is all about!
May 18th: From 15:00 to 18:00 Semi-Finals: Hearing the final pitches from your teams, picking the finalists, networking borrel.
May 24th: From 16:00 to 19:00: Finals.
Q: Who selects the winners?
A: In the semi-finals, you will select the team you wish to see go forward in the competition. Both teams assigned to your case will have the opportunity to pitch you their solution. Out of the two, you will choose one as your finalist.
In the final round, a jury composed professionals and experts will select a winner from the five finalists.
Q: What happens after the battle?
A: After the battle finishes, should you want to implement one of the solutions pitched to you, we will make it possible for you to stay in touch with your team and work together.

Q: Why should I partner with/sponsor you?
A: This is not only about helping us! It’s ultimately about investing in a more sustainable future together, and preparing the new generation to face new global environmental challenges. Would you like to create impact within your community, and contribute to making a difference? The SBB is the perfect opportunity for you to do this! As a non-profit organisation, we empower students, but also businesses, and make the case for sustainability and economics in today’s world. We raise awareness, share skills and knowledge, and challenge the status-quo.
Q: I am interested in supporting the Sustainable Business Battle, but do not wish to present a case. What are my options?
A: First of all, thank you! We appreciate any help. We have managed to establish successful partnerships throughout the years with organisations such as Rabobank, associations like Minerva, and institutions such as Leiden University. We would love to have you on board as well!
In terms of sponsorship/partnership, you have several options:
You can promote the SBB within your circle/association/company/network…
You can provide a service (ex: catering, location, a workshop…)
You can financially contribute to the SBB
Q: What’s in it for me?
A: Not only do you get to contribute to an impactful and incredible experience for students, and a rewarding experience for businesses, but you are also able to get certain benefits. This includes promotion and access to our networking events. You will furthermore have the opportunity to gain expertise in sustainability, and reach out to over 50 qualified university students.
Should you wish to explorer partnership opportunities, and potentially sponsor the SBB, please get in touch with our Treasurer and Community Engagement Manager, Ryan Kap, at firstname.lastname@example.org, or our Promotion and Communications Manager, Marie-Sophie Barreau, at email@example.com
