Applying

Q: Who can apply?

A: Anyone who is currently enrolled in a study or has graduated within the last two years. Applicants from all universities in the Netherlands are encouraged to apply.

Q: I’ve already participated in one of the previous SBB editions. Can I apply again?

A: Yes, of course, welcome back!

Q: Can I apply with a group?

A: You should absolutely motivate your friends to apply with you! However, due to our diversity criteria for teams, we do not accept group applications and cannot guarantee you will be in the same team as your friends. But do not worry, this will be a great opportunity to make new friends, and meet new people!

Q: I am not part of a student association, can I still apply?

A: Yes you can. The SBB is for all students attending a Dutch university (WO) or university of applied sciences (HBO).

Q: Is Dutch a requirement?

A: Dutch is not a prerequisite. However, we will make sure that at least one person per team speaks fluent Dutch. This is to ensure that when doing research or handling data, non-Dutch speakers are at no disadvantage.

Q: I have no knowledge or experience in sustainability or business, can I still join?

A: Absolutely. Although previous knowledge in sustainability and/or business is appreciated, it is by no means a requirement. We will provide you with training and workshops, so you will become a sustainability pro in no time!

The Battle

Q: Is there a participation fee?

A: No! Apart from transportation, the Sustainable Business Battle takes in charge all costs, and you are not required to pay any fee. This is to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate and benefit from this experience.

Q: I am unable to attend one of the events. Can I still participate?

A: It is crucial for you and your team to be there for every event. If however you are unable to attend a session, due to unforeseen circumstances or a previous commitment (ex: an exam), please let us know as soon as possible! We will try and arrange something so that you can participate.

Q: How much time will I need to invest?

A: We expect you to be present for the kick-off, training days, the semi-final, and the final. Please note that most events happen during the weekend. Of course, you are free to meet up with your teammates throughout the week to fine-tune your strategy for the competition. But this is entirely up to you!

For businesses

Partnering with us

More information of participating as a company and our two-pager:

Q: How many companies will be participating?

A: Usually, 5 companies participate in the Sustainable Business Battle. Each company provides a business case for the student teams to solve.

Q: How many students will be assigned to my case?

A: Two teams of five students each will be assigned to your case. Each team will be selected by the organizers and made up of students from a variety of academic backgrounds and nationalities.

Q: What are the requirements for participating as a company?

A:  In order to participate in the SBB, we require the following:

  • A business case that is relevant to the SBB and related to your core business

  • Your presence during an online session

  • Since we are a student-led organisation, we require a financial contribution to make the SBB 2021 possible

Q: We would like to participate but we don’t have a business case

A: This is not a problem! We believe that every company has opportunities to gain from the Sustainable Business Battle. We have a team of organizers who would be more than happy to collaborate with you and come up with a business case together.

During the battle

Q: How much time does it take to participate?

A: We require the presence of at least one representative of your company during the following events (exact times TBA):

  • Networking Borrel: Meeting fellow companies, former participants, coaches, and the SBB team.

  • First training day: Meeting your teams, present your case, and hearing their first pitch

  • Hearing the final pitches from your teams, picking the finalists, networking borrel

Q: Who selects the winners?

A: In the semi-finals, the representatives of the 5 participating companies will select the best team working on their case. Both teams assigned to your case will have the opportunity to pitch their solution. Out of these two, you will choose one team that will continue to the finals.

In the finals, the winner of the Sustainable Business Battle 2021 will be selected by a jury of experts in sustainability.

Additionally, a Public Favourite will be chosen out of all the participating teams.

Q: What happens after the battle?

A: We strive to make the Sustainable Business Battle as valuable as possible for both students and companies. Should you want to implement one of the solutions pitched to you, we will make it possible to stay in touch with your team and work together.

Getting involved

Q: Why should I partner with/sponsor you?

A: This is not only about helping us! It’s ultimately about investing in a more sustainable future together, and preparing the new generation to face new global environmental challenges. Would you like to create impact within your community, and contribute to making a difference? The SBB is the perfect opportunity for you to do this! As a non-profit organisation, we empower students, but also businesses, and make the case for sustainability and economics in today’s world. We raise awareness, share skills and knowledge, and challenge the status-quo.

Q: I am interested in supporting the Sustainable Business Battle, but do not wish to present a case. What are my options?

A: First of all, thank you! We appreciate any help. We have managed to establish successful partnerships throughout the years with organisations such as Rabobank, associations like Minerva, and institutions such as Leiden University. We would love to have you on board as well!

In terms of sponsorship/partnership, you have several options:

  • You can promote the SBB within your circle/association/company/network…

  • You can provide a service (ex: catering, location, a workshop…)

  • You can financially contribute to the SBB

Q: What’s in it for me?

A: Not only do you get to contribute to an impactful and incredible experience for students, and a rewarding experience for businesses, but you are also able to get certain benefits. This includes promotion and access to our networking events. You will furthermore have the opportunity to gain expertise in sustainability, and reach out to over 50 qualified university students.
